Using a Fire Extinguisher

Using a Fire Extinguisher

Posted by the FSS Team on May 9th 2024

We invite you to read our Step-by-Step Guide on using a Fire Extinguisher and how to mastering the PASS Technique. In the critical moments of a fire emergency, knowing how to use a fire extinguisher can make the difference between a minor incident and a devastating blaze. Fire Safety Supply is committed to ensuring that everyone has the knowledge and skills to use a fire extinguisher effectively, emphasizing not only the importance of having extinguishers readily available but also providing comprehensive training on their use. This guide offers a step-by-step breakdown of the PASS technique — a simple yet lifesaving procedure for operating most fire extinguishers.

Understanding the PASS Technique

Pull: The first step involves pulling the pin at the top of the extinguisher. This pin prevents the extinguisher from accidentally discharging. Pulling it out will break the tamper seal and ready the extinguisher for use.

Aim: Aim the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not the flames. Effective fire extinguishing targets the fuel source, not the flames themselves. Standing about 6 to 8 feet away from the fire is typically advised, but always maintain a safe distance to avoid harm.

Squeeze: Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent. Applying steady pressure will discharge the agent and allow you to combat the fire.

Sweep: Sweep the nozzle or hose from side to side at the base of the fire until it appears to be out. Continue to watch the area in case the fire reignites, and be prepared to repeat the process if necessary.

Knowing When to Fight a Fire Versus Evacuating

While using a fire extinguisher can be crucial in preventing fires from spreading, it's equally important to recognize when a fire is beyond your capacity to control. Consider evacuating instead of attempting to extinguish the fire if:

  • The fire is larger than a small trash bin.
  • The fire is spreading rapidly and not contained.
  • You do not have a clear escape route.
  • You are not confident in your ability to use the extinguisher effectively.

Our team advocates for safety first, emphasizing that no property is worth risking personal injury or life. If in doubt, evacuate immediately and call emergency services.

Fire Safety Supply’s Commitment to Safety

Fire Safety Supply is dedicated to more than just the sale of fire extinguishers; we are committed to ensuring that individuals and organizations have the training and knowledge to use them effectively. Our comprehensive fire extinguisher training programs are designed to instill confidence and competence, covering the PASS technique, fire extinguisher types, maintenance procedures, and the critical decision-making process of when to fight a fire and when to evacuate. We care deeply about everyone's safety and are here to support your preparedness efforts with both products and training.

Understanding how to use a fire extinguisher correctly is a fundamental aspect of fire safety. By following the PASS technique and recognizing when it is safe to fight a fire, you can protect yourself and others in emergency situations. Fire Safety Supply’s commitment to safety education underscores the importance of not just having a fire extinguisher but also knowing how to use it. Remember, the knowledge you gain today can save lives tomorrow.
