Introduction
In order to ensure that they are available and operate properly when needed, both federal certification requirements and state licensure requirements mandate that healthcare facilities properly inspect, test and maintain their portable fire extinguishers . Unless otherwise indicated, this guide will focus on federal certification requirements.
Applicable standards
NFPA 101(00), Sec. 9.7.4.1 and MSFC(07), Sec. 906.2 require that portable fire extinguishers be inspected and maintained in accordance with NFPA 10, Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers. NFPA 101(00), Sec. 2.1.1 references the 1998 edition of NFPA 10. MSFC(07), Chapter 45, on the other hand, references the 2002 edition of the standard. For purposes of this guide, all code references will be based on the 1998 edition of NFPA 10.
Visual inspections
Portable fire extinguishers are required to be visually inspected when initially placed in service and at least monthly thereafter . These visual inspections, intended to help ensure that each extinguisher is in its designated place and will operate if needed, can be performed by facility staff.
